If you have been to a concert that uses lightsticks, you may have seen people using extremely bright orange lightsticks to do a rapid cyclone motion whenever it gets to the most hyped part of a song. If you ever thought of doing that too, then you will need some Ultra Orange (UO) lightsticks. However, if you noticed, usually the lightsticks dim within a few minutes, so won’t you need to bring a lot? Well, recently I was introduced to some rechargeable ones. I was sceptical since a lot of people still used one-time consumable ones. So I decided to do an experiment / demonstration so that others with the same questions could also find the answer here.
ライトスティックを使用するコンサートに行ったことがある方なら、曲の最も盛り上がる部分で非常に明るいオレンジ色のライトスティックを使って急速にサイクロンの動きをする人々を見たことがあるでしょう。もしあなたもそれを試してみたいと思ったら、Ultra Orange（UO）ライトスティックが必要です。しかし、気づいたかもしれませんが、通常ライトスティックは数分で暗くなるので、たくさん持っていく必要がありませんか？実は最近、充電式のライトスティックを紹介されました。多くの人がまだ使い捨てのものを使っているので、私は懐疑的でした。そこで、同じ疑問を持つ他の人たちがここで答えを見つけられるように、実験／デモンストレーションを行うことにしました。
For comparison, I used the following two brands. There is no particular reason other than experienced concert-goers recommending it and also what I could easily find from the shops in Japan. You can also easily buy them from Amazon Japan (#Ad) below and have them delivered to your country if you happen to have a concert that needs it outside Japan. 比較のため、以下の2つのブランドを使用しました。特に理由はありませんが、経験豊富なコンサート参加者からの推薦や、日本の店舗で簡単に見つけられることが理由です。また、日本以外で必要なコンサートがある場合は、Amazon Japan（#Ad）から購入してご自身の国に配送してもらうことも簡単です。（Amazon USでも検索してみますが、充電式タイプや使い捨てタイプの選択肢は非常に限られています）(#Ad)

Max Brightness / 最大輝度:
In the (amateur) video I recorded in a hotel room the night before I need to fly back after holiday, you can see that the max brightness is generally the same. I tried installing a lux meter app on my phone to do a more objective test, but since the max brightness of the consumable one only lasts very briefly (talking about within 30-45 seconds), so I thought a visual comparison is easier to understand.
帰国する前夜にホテルの部屋で録画した（素人の）動画では、最大輝度はほぼ同じであることが分かります。客観的なテストをするためにスマホにルクスメーターアプリをインストールしてみましたが、消耗品タイプの最大輝度が非常に短時間（30～45秒以内）しか持続しないため、視覚的な比較の方が分かりやすいと思いました。
Longevity / 耐久性:
The timing is not entirely accurate since it was just based on my phone clock, but you can generally get the idea. Please pardon the phone auto-correcting the brightness/colour etc, but for birghtness comparison purposes should be sufficient
タイミングは完全に正確ではなく、スマホの時計を基にしただけですが、大体のイメージは掴めると思います。スマホが自動で明るさや色を調整している点はご容赦ください。ただし、明るさの比較目的としてはたぶん十分です。
Just to let you guys know, the ambient light in the room was around 25lux when I recorded, and if I took the same meter to outdoors daylight, it could easily reach 2000 even on a cloudy day, so our lightsticks are bright, but obviously cannot be compared to sunlight.
皆さんにお知らせしておきますが、録画した部屋の環境光は約25ルクスでした。同じメーターを屋外の日中に持ち出すと、曇りの日でも簡単に2000ルクスに達します。つまり、ライトスティックは明るいですが、当然ながら太陽光とは比較になりません。
So comparing short term max brightness, you can see that the rechargeable one lasts way longer than the consumable ones. How about battery life? In the official website from TurnON, it states that one full charge can lasts the same as 500 consumable ones! Even if assuming that they either exaggerate or that they are using the low-energy mode, if it lasts 150 consumable ones, it is also way longer than what you need for multiple concerts.
短期間の最大明るさを比較すると、充電式のものは使い捨てのものよりはるかに長持ちするのがわかります。それでは、バッテリーの寿命はどうでしょうか？TurnONの公式ウェブサイトによれば、フル充電で使い捨てのもの500本分と同じ時間持続するとのことです！仮にこれが誇張されている、または低エネルギーモードを使用しての測定だとしても、150本分持続すると仮定すれば、複数のコンサートに十分対応できるでしょう。
Cost / コスト:
In terms of cost, it really depends on how many lightsticks you intend to use per concert. From people I know, they tend to bring 25-50 consumable lightsticks. So let’s assume 30 lightsticks per concert, and at average costs of 107yen per lightstick if you buy in bulk of 25, then the consumable ones would cost about 30 x 107 = 3210yen per concert. So if you attend 2 concerts, it would be around 6420yen.
費用に関しては、コンサートごとに何本のライトスティックを使うかによって大きく異なります。私の知る限り、多くの人は25～50本の使い捨てライトスティックを持参する傾向があります。ここでは1回のコンサートで30本使用すると仮定し、25本単位でまとめ買いした場合の1本あたりの平均コストが107円とすると、使い捨てライトスティックの費用は約30本×107円＝3210円となります。したがって、2回のコンサートに参加すると、約6420円になる計算です。
In comparison, to use the rechargeable ones, you will need to buy 2. With each at 3685yen, the cost over two concerts would be 7370yen. It is slightly more expensive than the consumable ones, but that is assuming if you only attend 2 concerts. If you attend any more, then the rechargeable ones would be way more cost effective.
これに対して、充電式ライトスティックを使う場合、2本購入する必要があります。1本あたり3685円とすると、2回のコンサートでの費用は7370円となります。使い捨てライトスティックよりも少し高価ですが、これはあくまで2回のコンサートに参加する場合の計算です。それ以上のコンサートに参加する場合は、充電式ライトスティックのほうがはるかにコストパフォーマンスが良くなります。
Weight and Size / 重量:
Who wants to lug around a box full of consumable lightsticks which are both bulky and heavy? At 30g each light stick, if you need 30numbers of lightstick per concert, you will need an extra 900g of weight. In comparison, the two rechargeable ones only weigh 84g each so it is about 168g total.
As shown in the photo above, a box of 25 lightsticks is kind of bulky too, so for me, I would definitely prefer the rechargeable ones.
誰が使い捨てライトスティックを箱ごと持ち運びたいと思うでしょうか？これらはかさばるうえに重いです。ライトスティック1本あたり30gとすると、1回のコンサートで30本必要な場合、追加で900gの重さが増えます。これに対して、充電式ライトスティックは1本84gしかないので、2本で合計168gです。
上記の写真に示されているように、25本入りの箱は結構かさばります。そのため、私としては間違いなく充電式ライトスティックを選びます。
One more point, for ease of transport, some might wonder whether the consumable ones can be brought on airplane. I tested it recently and brought it with me on carry on without issue. However, many people say that it counts as the liquid limit so maybe if I brought more, I would have been stopped. In case you were wondering, the consumable type also didn’t break from the cabin pressure so it is safe to carry, but the rechargeable types would be easier.
もう一点、輸送のしやすさについてですが、使い捨てタイプのライトスティックが飛行機に持ち込めるかどうか気になる方もいるかと思います。私は最近試してみて、手荷物として問題なく持ち込めました。ただし、多くの人が液体制限に該当すると言っているので、もしもっと多く持ち込んでいたら止められていたかもしれません。ちなみに、使い捨てタイプは機内の気圧で壊れることはなかったので、安全に持ち運べます。しかし、充電式タイプの方がより簡単です。
Conclusion / 結論:
Based on the above comparison, the way forward seems to be to use the rechargeable type. Of course, the feeling of cracking the consumable UO is kind of addictive though, so I would fully understand the reluctance to change. One more point I forgot to mention is that the rechargeable one has smallish buttons that I fumbled with to adjust to max brightness. It would feel annoying if I missed the hype chorus while fumbling. Anyway, hope the above post answers some questions people might have comparing rechargeable and one-time consumable UO lightsticks.
上記の比較に基づいて、今後は充電式タイプを使用する方が良さそうです。もちろん、使い捨てUOのパリッとした音が中毒性があって、変更するのを躊躇する気持ちもよくわかります。もう一つ言い忘れたことは、充電式ライトスティックには小さなボタンがあり、最大の明るさに調整する際にちょっと手間取ったことです。調整中にハイプのコーラスを逃したら面倒に感じるかもしれません。とにかく、上記の投稿が充電式と使い捨てのUOライトスティックを比較する際に抱いているかもしれない疑問に答えられることを願っています。
