For fans of YOASOBI, I am sure that you would already be aware of their new song released today. The song is titled “New me” and could be heard here at Amazon Music (#Ad). Have you heard it already?
Personally, without knowing anything about the lyrics, the words that first came to mind were: “chill, playful and cute”. This is totally in line with the song graphics too, right? Full of pink. However, after reading the YOASOBI tweet that this song was as usual based on a novel, and remembering how I was previously totally fooled by the upbeat melody of 夜に駆ける (Yoru ni Kakeru) to only find out about the serious undertone of the story later, this time I tried to at least search for a bit of info about the novel first.
The name of the novel is「白山通り炎上の件」and ChatGPT gave me a brief summary as follows:
As you can see, the story involves, crime, urban isolation, social pressure and dark secrets. So I guess the song itself won’t be as rosy as it first seems, and I really need to wait for the lyrics to be translated before I could understand a bit more.
The song was also used for a CM (commercial) in Japan, and although in the video below it seems that it was just a very short snippet, but seems YOASOBI is really on fire with the amount of exposure they are getting:
Interestingly (for me at least), since my other favorite singer, LiSA, also has a song with the same name “NewMe”, I wondered if there are any similarities in the reason for creating the song.
For LiSA, the song represented her first step into a new decade, her 11th year since her solo debut, and in retrospect, possibly her thoughts as she contemplated to becoming a mother. The song had two distinct parts with a change in tempo in the middle to signify restarting her music journey / new life chapter.
I wonder if the YOASOBI “New me”, being a song just after their 5th Year Debut anniversary, has any similar meaning too? Regardless of whether there is any hidden meaning, one thing is for sure, it is definitely going to be featured in the 2025 YOASOBI nationwide hall tour, and maybe even the upcoming overseas tour, so I better be familiar with it first before watching them in Singapore.
